This garment evolved from what I'm pretty sure was meant to be upholstery fabric...but it was a gorgeous pink and cream houndstooth that I couldn't resist turning into a blazer--with the help of McCall's M5329 pattern and a longtime friend. Before taking this project on, I'd pretty much only hemmed and altered my own clothes to fit better; I'd never attempted making something from a pattern. My friend, a costume design major, is very experienced and talented with a sewing machine, and my "Mary Kay Lady" jacket and subsequent immersion into the world of clothes-making are in no small part thanks to her.
From 2 yards of Wal-Mart fabric (if I indeed have followers, you'll find that a lot of my materials come from there as I'm disgustingly frugal) came an article of clothing that, I feel, is fairly arguably one of a kind. Though not at all near perfect in execution, I'll most likely be the only one to ever wear it, and a few shitty seams are no bother to me at all when I think about all the time I spent on the blazer, and how I feel when I wear it :)
Shamefully, I must admit exactly how long this particular garment sat in mid-completion...I purchased the fabric around the time I graduated high school and started the buttons, cutting, pinning, and basic structure of the jacket that summer--however, I had caught the fabric hoarding bug and got so wrapped up in beginning other items that it was forgotten for a long while. A few months ago, I picked it up once again and with a great burst of gumption, finished everything that needed finishing (buttonholes (pain in my ass), hems, sleeves), and proudly tried on the fruit of my labor. Did I mention that I graduated high school in 2007? Yeah, three years hiatus...I am embarrassed to admit. But that's why I've started this blog! Hopefully, while I'm stuck in limbo, this'll give me something to accomplish and work towards...however small a step it may be.
